Reading In Color : November 2018

Lots of amazing things happen in November. It signals the beginning of the mainstream American Holiday season but in addition to all those fun and exciting events there are several of holidays that are beloved by many others living here and throughout the world. I will invite you to share two of these events through reading to your children with this months selections.  November is Native American Heritage Month and November also holds the Hindu Celebration of Diwali. Of course, there are many more celebrations worth mentioning but I will share these two books and I encourage you to look into finding out so much more.

THUNDER BOY JR by Sherman Alexie

Thunder Boy Jr.

Although these days it is much easier to provide you children a diverse reading experience it is still difficult to find diverse books actually written by authors of color. I try to recommend writers from different backgrounds as well. The writer of this book Sherman Alexie, is an award winning writer of Native ancestry who grew up on the Spokane Indian reservation. He channels his culture and experiences into wonderful and engaging stories for children, teens, and adults. His children’s book Thunder Boy Jr is an excellent addition to your library.

Thunder Boy Jr. is a delightful story about a young boy named after his father Thunder Boy Sr. He laments on how he doesn’t like his name and yearns to be an individual. The story is light-hearted and fun while showing you everyday life through the eyes of a young native boy. The story is easy to relate to and entertaining.  It is most certainly one that will be read over and over in your home.

Diwali (Celebrate The World Series) by Hannah Eliot

Diwali is known as the celebration of lights and is celebrated by Hindus in the northern hemisphere every fall. The date varies but the celebrations are vibrant and full of fun.  The 5 day holiday is hugely popular as it celebrates the virtue of goodness over evil and light over dark. The tradition correlates with the story of Ramayana, an ancient tale the tells of the defeat of the evil king Ravana. Communities come together and prepare the festivities to enjoy with one another and lift up the goodness in life. It is a holiday of joy and revelry. There are several local Diwali celebrations in our city and they are worth checking out.

This simple board book give a great description of the holiday and has amazing illustrations. It gives a brief history and details the reasons behind the tradition.  You and your child can follow the family through each day of the festival and see how they celebrate. I also must say that even though this is a board book it would be enjoyable for older children as well.  The bright colors and easy to follow information on the holiday make it the perfect choice to introduce young ones to Diwali.

Stay tuned for more selections next month!
