The Hillman Performing Arts Series at Shady Side Academy kicks back into high gear this spring with two high-energy performances that are fun for the whole family, plus an evening of Celtic music perfect for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day night out!

On Saturday, March 16, The Amazing Max delivers an interactive, all-around silly magic show for audiences of all ages. Max Darwin combines magic and comedy, making objects appear and disappear and generally defying the laws of physics inches from theatergoer’s faces. Operating on the principle that “every show is unique because every child brought to the stage is unique,” Max conjures a custom magic experience that kids will carry with them long after the show ends. It’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday evening with the whole family! Tickets are only $24-30 and include a pre-show magic lab, so be sure to come early to join in the fun. While he’s in town, The Amazing Max also will hold a private performance for patients at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as part of the Hillman Center’s community outreach program.

On Saturday, April 13, expect the unexpected with The Flying Karamazov Brothers, a juggling and comedy troupe featuring four self-proclaimed eccentric lunatics in a zany showcase filled with laugh-out-loud comedy, wild theatrics, arcane errata and astonishing juggling feats. Formed in 1973, The Flying Karamazov Brothers have been seen around the world, on Broadway, on television and on the big screen. They are not, however, your father’s wild-haired, flame-throwing, juggling, kilt-and-tutu-wearing performers. If you see one group of multi-faceted new vaudevillians at the apex of their ambidextrous and alliterative ability, see The Flying Karamazov Brothers. Tickets are only $24-30, so bring the whole family and belly-laugh the night away! Learn more and buy tickets.

Looking for a break from the kids and an inexpensive date night out? The Hillman Series’ Black Box shows offer coffeehouse-style performances for grownups in the Hillman Center’s more intimate black box theater. The last Black Box show of the season is on Saturday, March 9, and features Poor Man’s Gambit, an energetic trio of traditional Irish musicians blending Celtic and American music. Their repertoire is also influenced by traditional music of other cultures, including France, Scotland and England. Tickets are only $20 and include coffeehouse treats. Learn more and buy tickets.

All shows are Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, located on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus at 423 Fox Chapel Road in Fox Chapel, just 10 minutes off the Fox Chapel exit of Route 28. Parking is free.
