A Letter to my Second Born on his First Birthday

Dear Son,

You’ll probably hear this from me again and again throughout the years, but I cannot believe how fast time is going. It doesn’t even seem possible that you are a year old. I often feel like we missed the baby stage with you, not only did you arrive in this world at 8 lbs 4oz to begin with, a lot bigger than your older sister (who was just 6lbs 15oz), you grew faster than I ever imagined you would and life was more hectic than I ever thought possible. It was seriously like we brought you home and I blinked and you were 4 months, blinked again and you were 10 months and blinked yet again and made it here to your first birthday.

You have had a strong personality since day one – you know what you want and when you want it. You went from the baby who was content playing on a blanket with a few toys to a child who is constantly on the move. You don’t stay in one place for long – always crawling and cruising to somewhere. You are into everything and as difficult as that is sometimes, I wouldn’t change it for anything. Your smile is contagious and your laugh is one of the best parts of my day. You may not love sleeping through the night, but that’s okay (I should have known I wouldn’t have two amazing sleepers); I’ve learned that extra coffee and super early morning schedules are tough, but worth it.

When you came into this world I thought I knew what to expect as our family grew from three to four, but I had no idea. I had no idea the joy and love that would fill my heart each time I looked at you. How you made our lives even crazier than they were, but complete. It is cheesy to say, but you completed us; we never knew we needed you, but we did.

It has been such a blessing to experience all of the baby firsts again with you, but it is bitter sweet because it’s your first at everything and our first to experience all of these with you, but it’s our family’s last. Your sister will always be the oldest and you the youngest. It is so amazing to see you and your sister together, I know like all siblings you will have your ups and downs; and each one will help shape you both. I know you two will stick together, I can already tell – and it is the most beautiful thing.

You have completed our family and I can’t be more excited to see what the next year brings, I just hope I can slow time down just a tad…. because I don’t want to blink and miss a second.

Happy first birthday baby boy!

I love you –

Mommy
