Pittsburgh Moms Blog’s Family Fun Round Up, October Edition!

Pittsburgh in October has the potential to be truly beautiful. The cooler weather is more comfortable than the humidity of summer.  The leaves changing brings an even more beautiful backdrop to the city. It is the time of year when you want to be outside, breathing in the smell of leaves and pumpkin spice. And lucky for you there is an abundance of fun activities and events in and around Pittsburgh this month for you and your family to enjoy! And to make your life just a little bit easier we have compiled some of our favorites for you in the list below.

October 6th
Public Safety and Health Hayday

South Park Fair Grounds
12pm to 4pm
At this event you will find hay rides, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, bounce houses, puppet show, games and food trucks! In addition to the fun you will be able to meet some of the people who work to keep the public safe and health everyday. They will even have their vehicles and equipment there for everyone to check out.

October 7th
Hatch Patch: Ceramic Jack O’ Lanterns Family Workshop

10am to 11am
Hatch Studio  Pittsburgh, PA
Create you own family keepsake Jack O’Lantern using terra cotta, carving and glazes.  $40 for 1 pumpkin, $25 for each additional. Best for children 3 and up.

October 8th
Columbus Day Fall Festival Fun!
Triple B Farms Monongahela, PA
12pm to 6pm
Need somewhere to celebrate Columbus Day and a day off of school? Head to Triple B Farms for a day full of activities.

October 9th
Family Pumpkin Patch Night
The Springhouse Washington, PA
4:30pm to 6:00pm
Enjoy an evening hayride to the pumpkin patch where you can choose one to take home. Also stay for dinner with home cooked food and baked goods available for purchase!

Columbus Ship Tours
Station Square
9am to 6pm
The ‘Nina’ and the ‘Pinta’ are sailing museums. You can walk-aboard and enjoy a self guided tour as you explore the history of Christopher Columbus. $8.50 for adults, $6.50 for students 5-16, children 4 and under free. No reservations necessary. Boats in port Sept 29th through October 10th.

This event occurs every Wednesday morning and usually lasts about 15mins. A simple fun art activity is planned each which. The activity is geared toward children 1-5 years of age. This event allows children the opportunity to socialize, use their imaginations and practice their fine motor skills. Reservations are not required. 

October 11th
Light of Night: Pittsburgh
Heinz Field
5:30pm to 9pm
Light the Night brings people together to celebrate those who are fighting leukemia and lymphoma and to honor those who we have lost. Every registered walker carries an iconic Light the Night illuminated lantern.

Discovering Dinosaurs at Snapology 
Snapology Bridgeville, PA
6pm to 7pm
This event is specifically for your 3 to 5 years olds. Your kiddo will have the chance to explore the world of the dinosaurs, learning about their body parts, habitats, and diets. They will even incorporate practicing counting and colors! Tickets required.

Fall Fest 2018
Southpointe Town Center
4pm to 8pm 
The family event night has so much going on! Enjoy a Battle of the Bands between local high school and middle school bands. Main street will be filled with a pumpkin patch, sweet treats, and lots of games! Event proceeds benefit the Amercian Cancer Society.

Trax Farms Evening Hay Rides

Enjoy an evening hayride up the hill and around the barn while taking in the beauty of the surrounding farm. Pick your own pumpkin and enjoy a 4 acre corn maze.

Very Zooperstitious Family Overnight
Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

This fun event gives you a unique opportunity to experience the animals after dark. Enjoy animal encounters, behind the scenes tours, and a late night snack. Plus, a sleepover at the zoo! Tickets $40 per person for members and $50 per person for non members. Advance ticket purchase required.

Meet Me at the Pumpkin Patch & Fall Family Photo Shoot

Sharpsburg transforms itself into the magical village of Sharpsmeade for this special event. This wizard themed event encourages you to come in costume and even enjoy a chance to enter the costume contest. There will be food, music and free activities for the whole family too!

October 14th
The Secret Garden

Enjoy the mystery and legend of the Secret Garden as you follow Mary as she explores her new home on England. Following the show enjoy a tea party with Mary and her friends. The tea party includes a visit with your favorite characters and yummy treats. Tickets are $10.

Halloween Story Walk
Donaldson Park at the North Fayette Community Center
1:30 to 2:30pm
Enjoy a walk down the path while listening to the Halloween Hustle, a special Halloween book. Following the walk there will be a craft and an opportunity to check out more library books!

Trunk or Treat

Enjoy a family friendly car cruise complete with Trick or Treating!

Spanish for Tots
Chartiers- Houston Community Library Houston, PA

This class is geared toward children infant to 3 years old. Through music, movement and storytelling your little one will begin to learn Spanish!

October 16th
Phipps Fall Flower Show: 125 Years of Wonder
9:30am to 5:00pm
Enjoy the beauty of fall in the shape of breath taking floral and plant displays. Even enjoy the winding Serpentine room which has been transformed into George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead experience. The fall flower show runs through November 4th.

October 17th
The Glow: A Jack O Lantern Experience

Hartwood Acres Park

Witness the magic of thousands of hand carved Jack O’ Lanterns lighting up Hartwood Acres park. Fun for all ages. Fall drinks and treats too! Tickets required. Tickets $35. Kids 2 and under free. Event runs October 4th through the 28th.

Meet the Werewolf

This event is geared toward children 3rd grade to 5th grade who do not scare easily. Come and learn the history and stories of werewolves going all the way back to ancient Greece.

Haunted Mini Golf

This mini golf course has been transformed into a dark and creepy setting with pop up scares along the way! The golf balls even glow in the dark!

October 19th
Freaky Friday: Scary Swim
Upper St. Clair Community Center
6pm to 8pm
Your little pumpkins will enjoy this themed swim event. They can even stop in the lobby to make a fun Halloween craft. Event is free for members. $8 for non members.

Night at the Zoo at Living Treasures in the Laurel Highlands
Living Treasures Jones Mill, PA
7pm to 11pm
Enjoy the zoo at night on a torch lit walk and experience the unique behaviors of the animals at night. All visitors are encouraged to come in costume! Free admission for children with the purchase of an adult admission with a jack o lantern! All the jack o lanterns will be entered in a weekly contest!

Spooktacular in Caste Village

A family fun day to celebrate Halloween! There will be a costume contest, carriage rides, live music and trick or treating. 

Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkin Festival
North Shore Pittsburgh, PA

This is a brand new event to Pittsburgh. It aims to bring a one of a kind fall fun experience to our city. This event will include the Great Pumpkin Paddle, where people will set sail on the river in hollowed out pumpkin boats. There will also be a pie eating contest, pumpkin decorating and more!

Hop Into History: Celebrate Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. This event helps children ages 2-5 years old hop into the history of Mister Rogers through hands on play. This includes music, dance and games!

This event is open to all ages. Wear your costumes to participate in a costume parade. There will also be crafts, games, treats and more!

Enjoy the fun of The Nightmare Before Christmas in a cool, crisp fall evening setting! Event is free and open to the public!

This event has fun for the whole family. Stop and take an opportunity to pick up some great fall produce in addition to fun activities such as face painting, balloon artist, pumpkin patch, and live music!

October 27th
Trick or Treat in Sewickley Business District

11:30am to 12:30pm
Enjoy trick or treating through the picturesque Sewickley Business District. Snacks and refreshments will be available too! Trick or Treating follows the Halloween parade that begins at 10:30am.

Magical Fall Princess Brunch with Cinderella and Friends

Little ones are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes or princess attire for this special brunch event. Not only will there be delicious food but also singing, dancing, pumpkin decorating, face painting, and trick or treating. Tickets required. $25 per child.

This event hosts age specific trick or treat times to enjoy safe, happy fun for all! The candy crawl will take place from 5-7pm and then the costume contest will take place from 7pm to 8pm. Each age group will have a costume contest winner!
